General Description
The Environmental & Wildlife Parks Assistant will provide administrative, programmatic, and field support to the Environmental Director in maintaining current environmental programs and implementing new environmental programs and initiatives. This position will assist with day-to-day administrative duties, grant-related activities, recordkeeping, outreach, reporting, scheduling, and environmental program coordination. The employee will also provide support for the Tribe’s BIA Wildlife Parks Program at the Caney, Kansas location, including maintenance and protection of natural spaces, habitat improvement, invasive-species management, and other grant-related activities. The position is intended to provide support to the Environmental Director while allowing the employee an opportunity to gain experience and develop knowledge in tribal environmental programs, natural-resource management, and grant administration.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Associate degree, college coursework, training, or experience in Environmental Science, Natural Resources, Business Administration, Public Administration, or a related field preferred.
- Previous experience in an environmental, administrative, grant-funded, natural-resource, or tribal government setting preferred, but not required.
- Strong organizational, written, and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to maintain accurate records, files, reports, and documentation.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office, email, data entry, and general office equipment.
- Ability and willingness to learn environmental programs, grant requirements, and applicable regulations.
- Ability to work independently and manage multiple projects and deadlines.
- Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions and perform light to moderate physical duties.
- Ability to lift up to 30 pounds.
- Must possess a valid driver’s license and be insurable under Tribal policy.
- Must be willing to travel between the Bartlesville, Oklahoma and Caney, Kansas locations as needed.
- Must pass required background check and drug screening.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Provide administrative support to the Environmental Director, including scheduling meetings, responding to emails, preparing correspondence, processing documents, maintaining calendars, and organizing program files.
- Assist the Environmental Director in planning, developing, implementing, and maintaining environmental programs and initiatives.
- Prepare and maintain detailed records, reports, files, spreadsheets, and other documentation related to environmental programs and grants.
- Assist with grant research, applications, administration, documentation, reporting, and completion of grant-funded projects.
- Track grant activities, purchases, program requirements, deadlines, and supporting documentation.
- Assist with preparation of reports and other information required by funding agencies.
- Plan and coordinate environmental outreach events, workshops, educational activities, and training sessions.
- Create flyers and outreach materials; coordinate dates, locations, presenters, and other event logistics.
- Communicate and coordinate with Tribal departments, community members, outside agencies, vendors, and other organizations as needed.
- Assist with monitoring environmental program compliance with applicable regulations, grant requirements, and Tribal ordinances.
- Maintain inventory of environmental supplies, equipment, and program materials.
- Assist with purchasing equipment and supplies in accordance with Tribal purchasing procedures and applicable grant requirements.
- Support emergency preparedness and response activities related to environmental hazards and natural disasters.
- Be available for Natural Disaster and Emergency Response activities as required.
- Assist with maintaining and protecting natural spaces associated with the Wildlife Parks Program at the Caney, Kansas location.
- Perform or assist with mowing, weeding, general grounds maintenance, trail maintenance, and upkeep of outdoor learning and recreational areas.
- Assist with habitat restoration and improvement projects.
- Assist with identification, treatment, and management of invasive plant species.
- Assist with pond management and other natural-resource projects.
- Assist with projects intended to increase biodiversity, including placement and maintenance of bird, bee, and bat houses and native vegetation.
- Assist with installation and maintenance of outdoor amenities such as benches, trails, educational areas, and other Wildlife Parks improvements.
- Operate or assist with appropriate mowing, landscaping, and maintenance equipment after receiving required training.
- Assist with maintaining and organizing Wildlife Parks equipment, tools, supplies, and storage areas.
- Assist with green-waste and natural-resource projects associated with the Wildlife Parks Program.
- Maintain appropriate documentation of work performed under the Environmental and Wildlife Parks programs to support grant reporting and recordkeeping.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Environmental Director.
The Wildlife Parks grant specifically includes outdoor learning spaces, mowing equipment,
invasive-vegetation management, biodiversity projects, bird/bee/bat houses, a gazebo and
benches, green-waste processing, and maintenance of the Caney property, so those duties are
grounded in the approved program rather than being added generally
